Recognising a stroke — FAST
Can you recognise the signs of a stroke in time? 5 mins · Certificate
Recognising a stroke — FAST
F — FACE
Ask the person to smile. Does one side of their face droop?
A drooping or uneven smile is one of the first signs of a stroke. It happens because the facial muscles on one side lose control. Even a slight droop should be taken seriously.
Which of these is a warning sign of stroke?

Dispatch ambulance
An ambulance is being requested. Stay with the person.
They are conscious — do this now:
Help them sit or lie down comfortably. Do not let them walk around.
Loosen any tight clothing around the neck, chest, and waist.
Do not give food, water, or any medication — even if they ask.

Ambulance
~8 min
Ambulance dispatched. Follow these steps until it arrives.
Check responsiveness
Shout "Are you okay?" and tap their shoulders. If no response, shout for anyone nearby to help.
Open the airway
Tilt their head back gently. Lift the chin with two fingers. Check for breathing for no more than 10 seconds.
Not breathing normally? Start compressions immediately.
Chest compressions
Heel of your hand on the centre of their chest. Push down 5–6cm hard and fast. Allow chest to fully rise between each one.
Do 30 compressions
Tap to count down with each compression
Rescue breaths
After 30 compressions — tilt head back, pinch nose, give 2 rescue breaths. Each about 1 second.
Not comfortable with rescue breaths? Continue compressions only. It still saves lives.
You are doing the right thing.
Help is on the way. Do not stop.
